Stop Your Conservatory Overheating With New Blinds

Spring will be here before you know it, at least we hope so, and with it comes those lovely sunny days we’ve all been waiting for.

But if you own a conservatory, you’ll know that sunshine isn’t always the blessing it should be. What starts as a bright, warm space in March can quickly turn into an unbearable greenhouse by May, leaving your conservatory unused while you stick to cooler rooms in the house.

This is such a shame! Conservatories are made for use during summer where you can relax and look at beautiful garden views and enjoy the sunshine. We’ve got some good news. You don’t have to put up with a conservatory that’s too hot to use. With the right blinds fitted now, you can get ahead of the problem and make sure your extension stays comfortable all summer long.

Why Conservatories Get So Hot

Conservatories are wonderful additions to any home, but they’re designed in a way that makes overheating almost inevitable during warmer months. Unlike the rest of your house, they’re built predominantly from glass. Glass is brilliant at trapping heat.

When sunlight streams through those glass panels and the roof, it creates what’s known as the greenhouse effect. The sun’s rays pass through the glass easily enough, but once they’re inside, the heat struggles to escape. Instead, it builds up throughout the day, turning your conservatory into something that feels more like a sauna than a living space.

The roof is often the biggest culprit. Because heat rises, that glass or polycarbonate roof absorbs and holds onto warmth, radiating it back down into the room below. Even on a moderately warm day, temperatures inside can soar well above what’s comfortable, making the space practically unusable.
Add to this the fact that many conservatories face south or west to maximise natural light, and you’ve got a recipe for serious overheating. Without proper temperature control, you’ll find yourself avoiding the room entirely during the sunniest parts of the day, which defeats the purpose of having a conservatory in the first place.

How Conservatory Blinds Keep Things Cool

Installing the right blinds is one of the most effective ways to take control of your conservatory’s temperature. They work by blocking or filtering sunlight before it has a chance to heat up the space, giving you a comfortable environment whatever the weather.

Quality conservatory blinds create a barrier between the harsh sunlight and your living space, reflecting the sun’s rays back outside rather than letting them flood in and create heat. This makes a dramatic difference to how hot the room gets, often reducing temperatures by several degrees and making the space usable again.

The beauty of conservatory blinds is that you’re in complete control. On cooler spring mornings, you can leave them open to let the warmth in. When the afternoon sun gets too intense, simply close them to keep things comfortable.

Whether you’re in Preston, Leyland, Fulwood, or Chorley, getting your blinds fitted before the weather really warms up means you’ll be ready when everyone else is scrambling to cool down their conservatories and we’re here to help.

Other Ways to Control Conservatory Temperature

While blinds are the most practical solution for most people, they work even better when combined with other temperature control methods.

Ventilation is key. Make sure you’re opening windows and roof vents regularly to let hot air escape and create airflow. Even with blinds fitted, a stuffy conservatory will still feel uncomfortable.

If you do have a PVC roof there are ways to improve how it controls temperature. You can apply a reflective film or a more permanent solution would be upgrading to a solid roof, although that’s not cheap and drastically changes the look of a conservatory.

You can experiment with adding plants to naturally cool the air through a process called transpiration. Just make sure any plants you choose are ideal for the bright conditions of a conservatory.

Finally, consider the flooring. Hard surfaces like tiles stay cooler than carpet and can help prevent heat build-up, making the room more comfortable underfoot during hot days.
